Adrian Gonzalez Not Fond of Possibly Dabbling in Outfield, But Will Accept Role If Necessary

TAMPA, Fla. –– Adrian Gonzalez is a three-time Gold Glove Award winner as a first baseman.

Although he's still penciled in to patrol that position this season, Gonzalez isn't exactly thrilled with Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine's potential plan of slotting him into the outfield this spring.

"I told Bobby I'm not an outfielder," Gonzalez said Monday. "We all know that. I'm not an outfielder. I'm a first baseman. But whatever it takes Papi [David Ortiz] to get some early at-bats."

Valentine first conveyed the notion on Mar. 3, saying Gonzalez's reps in the outfield will allow Ortiz a chance to expand his repertoire at first base. The purpose of Valentine's plan was to prepare for emergency situations down the road.

But the Red Sox skipper reiterated his idea on Monday.

"I think you'll see Lars Anderson play a little left field and might even see Adrian shag a fly or two," Valentine said.

Despite disputing the move, Gonzalez understands the premise.

"That's just [Valentine] being prepared for anything," he said.

Last season, Gonzalez played two games in the outfield.
