Report: Jason Giambi to Interview for Rockies Managerial Opening, Will Retire If Chosen to Take Job

Jason Giambi isn't quite ready to call it quits from playing, but if he does decide to hang 'em up, it appears he would do so in exchange for an excuse to keep a uniform on.

Giambi is interviewing to be the manager of the Colorado Rockies, according to the Denver Post, despite having undergone offseason hernia surgery in the hopes of playing one more season.

While the longtime first baseman has no previous coaching experience, he has "worked with Rockies players on their hitting and talked strategy frequently" with former manager Jim Tracy, according to the Post.

Tracy resigned from his post as Rockies manager at the end of this season, after going 294-308 since taking over in 2009. Colorado finished last in the NL West in 2012 with a record of 64-98.

The 41-year-old Giambi is expected to be the last of the in-house candidates that the Rockies are considering, before they turn their sights elsewhere to look for a manager. Giambi appeared in just 60 games this season for Colorado, batting just .225 in his 18th major league season.
