Report: Celtics Assistant Jay Larranaga Still ‘Serious Contender’ for Sixers’ Head Coaching Job

Brad Stevens has been busy pulling together his new coaching staff with the Celtics, but one member of his crew maintains an outside chance at a bigger opportunity for this season.

Jay Larranaga, the lone holdover from Doc Rivers‘ staff, remains a “serious contender” for the Philadelphia 76ers’ head coaching job, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Larranaga joins a long list of secondary candidates behind Spurs assistant Brett Brown, who has been rumored to be the frontrunner since draft night.

Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool, Bulls assistant (and former Celtics player) Adrian Griffin and Michael Curry, who was an assistant in Philadelphia under Doug Collins, are among Larranaga’s competition. None has been a head coach in the NBA.

Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie (pictured, with rookie Nerlens Noel) has refused to address the coaching search. Philadelphia remains the only team in the NBA without a head coach for the coming season.
