In an interview with Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun, Curtis Goyetche explained why he parted ways with his blue and orange sweater.
“I was just fed up. Frustrated. I was just being a passionate fan making my own statement, I guess. It just happened.”
The 6-0 loss to St. Louis dropped Edmonton to 11-24-3, which is the second-worst record in the NHL and not what fans or the team expected after entering the season with the goal of ending the NHL’s longest playoff drought. The Oilers have picked high in the draft for several years in a row and have amassed an impressive group of young talent, but the team has not developed at the same pace seen by other rebuilding teams such as the Colorado Avalanche.
If the team’s struggles don’t end soon, Edmonton will have a strong chance to draft first overall for the fourth time in the last five years.
In a press conference on Monday, Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins was asked about the fan’s actions, and he wasn’t happy.
