The Boston Red Sox don’t know how many players they’ll have at this month’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, but the Sox’s Triple-A affiliate will be well-represented at the minor league showcase.
Pawtucket Red Sox pitcher Anthony Ranaudo and catcher Christian Vazquez were both named International League All-Stars on Wednesday. They’ll represent the PawSox and the IL at the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game in Durham, N.C., on July 16.
Ranaudo has been one of Pawtucket’s best pitchers all season long in his first full Triple-A season. Ranaudo is 9-4 with a 2.35 ERA in 17 starts this season. Opponents are batting just .202 against the right-hander, which leads the International League. Ranaudo has been especially effective since May 15, having gone 6-2 with a 1.13 ERA in his last nine starts.
Vazquez is known for being one of the best defensive catching prospects in baseball and is third in the IL having thrown out 39 percent (18-for-46) of would-be base stealers. He’s also been good at the plate this season. Vazquez is hitting .275 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 62 games.
Pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Anthony Carter were selected to the IL All-Star team last season.
