CC Sabathia’s Season Likely Over, Yankees Manager Joe Girardi Reveals

CC Sabathia’s much-beleaguered season looks like it could be over, according to New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

Girardi all but told reporters before Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins that the left-hander’s season will not continue.

Sabathia looked to recover from a poor 2013 season in which he posted an ERA over 4.00 for the first time in eight years. But things did not go well from the get-go in 2014, and through his first eight starts, he had a 5.28 ERA and a 1.478 WHIP — both career worsts.

On May 11, Sabathia’s woeful campaign took another hit when he was placed on the disabled list with knee inflammation. He had been rehabbing since, but he faced another setback earlier this week. He pitched with the Double-A Trenton Thunder on Wednesday, giving up five runs in 3 2/3 innings of work. Afterward, Sabathia said he was fine.

The next day, however, Sabathia faced more swelling in his right knee, which forced the Yankees to shut him down.

Girardi added that Sabathia’s injury could require microfracture surgery, as reported by ESPN.

“He’s going to see Dr. (James) Andrews a week from Monday,” Girardi said, via ESPN. “(Surgery) is always a possibility when you have a degenerative knee. I’m not exactly sure if he was to have surgery what it would be, that’s yet to be determined.”

Sabathia still has two years left on his contract, with a guaranteed $23 million next season and $25 million in 2016.
