Jets Do Most Jets Thing, Call Timeout To Negate A Game-Tying TD (GIFs)

The New York Jets keep finding new ways to lose.

The Jets blew an 18-point, first-half lead Sunday against the Green Bay Packers but still had a chance to tie the game with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. On a fourth-down play from the Packers’ 37-yard line, Jets quarterback Geno Smith uncorked a beautiful pass to wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, who hauled it in for the game-tying touchdown.

Unfortunately, the play didn’t count because a timeout was called right before the snap. Smart move by the Packers, right? Wrong. Turns out the Jets called a timeout.

As you can see, Jets coach Rex Ryan is a little confused here, because he didn’t call the timeout. That distinction went to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who inexplicably tracked down a referee on the sideline and signaled for a timeout just before the ball was snapped.

While only a head coach can call timeouts, former NFL referee Mike Pereira explained that a last-second timeout most likely will be granted, regardless of who calls it.

The Jets promptly turned over the ball on downs after the timeout and ended up losing 31-24, because of course they did.
