Jimmy Graham’s Game-Winning Hail Mary Catch Negated By Penalty (GIFs)

It’s become clear that no one in the NFL can stop Jimmy Graham. Except Jimmy Graham.

That’s exactly what happened to the New Orleans Saints tight end Sunday afternoon. With one play left in regulation and his team tied with the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Drew Brees heaved the ball 50 yards toward the end zone. Graham, of course, came down with the ball for the apparent game-winning score.

Not so fast, Jimmy. The referees flagged the big tight end for offensive pass interference after he pushed off against Niners defensive back Perrish Cox.

Cox might have been aided by a “gust of wind,” but Graham did appear to extend his hands in a push-off motion, which likely caught the eye of the nearby official.

The penalty proved costly for Graham and Co., as Phil Dawson’s 35-yard field goal in overtime gave San Francisco a 27-24 win and snapped the Saints’ 11-game win streak at the Superdome.
