“The Hick From French Lick” defied all odds on his path to greatness. Growing up in poverty, he was faced with numerous obstacles before finally enjoying a storied NBA career.
Bird — referred to as “The Great White Hope” at the beginning of his career due to joining a league dominated by black players — quickly proved he was famous for more than just his skin color. He earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 1980, eventually followed by three MVP awards, 12 All-Star Game appearances and three NBA championships.
Known for his toughness just as much as his ability, Bird received a reputation as one of the best trash talkers in sports history. With all that he accomplished to achieve legendary status, he certainly deserved to talk as much trash as he wanted.
