If all goes well, Pele should leave the hospital soon and retake his throne as the king of soccer.
Pele, 74, left the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on Tuesday after showing signs of progress in his kidney function, Sky Sports reported. Pele originally was hospitalized Nov. 24 when doctors discovered a urinary tract infection following his surgery to remove kidney stones. The hospital released Pele after he beat the infection, but he returned last week for kidney support treatment. Albert Einstein Hospital says Pele now is under “semi-intensive care.”
“‘Pele is getting better,’ he was ‘lucid, eating well’ and has been ‘walking around’ the room,” the hospital said in a statement, according to Sky Sports.
“The hospital said Pele was in a ‘good condition’ in terms of blood pressure and the respiratory system, and continues to receive antibiotics intravenously,” Sky Sports’ report continues.
Pele has had one kidney since his playing days. The other one was removed following complications from a broken rib.
Pele helped Brazil win three FIFA World Cups — in 1958, 1962 and 1970 — and is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time.
Pele’s son, Edinho, says the Brazilian legend should be out of the hospital by the end of the week, according to Sky Sports.
