It’s official.
The 2016 Winter Classic will be a matchup of historic rivals when the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens meet Jan. 1 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the news Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, where All-Star Weekend is underway.
The Bruins will become the first team to host multiple Winter Classic games. They also hosted the league’s marquee outdoor event in 2010 at Fenway Park, where they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime.
The Canadiens are the second Canadian franchise to be selected for a Winter Classic. The Toronto Maple Leafs played the Detroit Red Wings at the University of Michigan in the 2014 Winter Classic.
Bettman also announced the two Stadium Series outdoor games scheduled for the 2015-16 NHL season. The Minnesota Wild will host the Chicago Blackhawks at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, and the Colorado Avalanche will host the Detroit Red Wings at Coors Field in Denver.
