What’s the nastiest pitch thrown by a Boston Red Sox pitcher?

That’s the question the Boston Herald recently set out to answer at Red Sox spring training. And the answer, according to the Herald, was almost unanimous: Koji Uehara’s splitter.

Because the responses were so overwhelmingly in favor of Uehara’s split, the Herald asked players to name the second-nastiest pitch thrown by a Red Sox hurler. Some responses are below.

Rick Porcello: “(Justin) Masterson’s slider. I mean, when he’s right and he’s on, that thing is nasty.”

Ryan Hanigan: “I didn’t realize Porcello threw such a good changeup, to tell you the truth. And (Wade) Miley has a nice cutter-slider that he throws to righties and lefties that doesn’t really get hit a lot.”

Joe Kelly: “I think Clay’s changeup is really good.”

Clay Buchholz: “I’d go with Eduardo Rodriguez’s fastball.”

Craig Breslow: “Don’t forget Steven Wright’s knuckleball.”
