Dante Fowler, Jaguars’ First-Round Draft Pick, Tears ACL, Likely Out For Season

The Jacksonville Jaguars likely lost Dante Fowler Jr., their 2015 first-round draft pick, for the upcoming season after the defensive end tore the ACL in his left knee Friday at the team’s first rookie minicamp practice.

Fowler, who enjoyed at a stellar career at the University of Florida, was selected by the Jaguars with the third overall pick in this year’s draft. As a talented pass rusher, Fowler was expected to play a pivotal role in a Jaguars defense that finished 22nd in the NFL in passing yards against per game last season.

Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo reported Fowler only sustained damage to his ACL and not other ligaments. USA TODAY Sports’ Lindsay Jones noted that San Diego Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram tore an ACL in May 2013, then played in December, meaning it’s not out of the question for Fowler to play in 2015.

Friday’s bad news is nothing new for the Jaguars. They have had very little luck with first-round picks in recent seasons.

Jacksonville hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2007 season.
