John Oliver Airs Message To Ex-FIFA VP Jack Warner On Trinidadian TV

Former FIFA vice president Jack Warner released a spot on Trinidadian television recently promising to release documents that show more corruption in the world soccer organization, and it caught comedian John Oliver’s eye.

But not for the reason you’d think it did.

While Oliver has been very open in his criticism of FIFA, the “Last Week Tonight” host was more interested in the fact that literally anyone can buy time on Trinidad’s TV6. So naturally, Oliver bought some airtime to respond to Warner in a segment called “The Mittens of Disapproval Are On” — a play on Warner’s segment, “The Gloves Are Off.”

And Oliver’s nearly five minute Trinidadian television debut came Tuesday.

“I am begging you — release everything,” Oliver said to Warner in the video, which you can watch over at Deadspin. “Because here’s my argument: Why the hell not? It’s not like you’re not already potentially in a lot of trouble. Seriously, I have been looking through the indictment, and good luck with that.

“Plus, apparently your sons are already cooperating with U.S. authorities, so if you don’t, it’s just going to be awkward. And finally — and I’ll be honest, this is my main reason — I’m pretty sure you have some absolutely hilarious examples of FIFA corruption.”

Oliver also offered Warner a pretty good explanation as to why he should reveal more FIFA corruption, even if it hurts his own case.

“Why should you do it?” Oliver said. “Well, put it this way. Right now, Jack, everybody hates you. Everybody. I mean, literally everybody. I think it’s something to do with you seeming like an absolutely terrible human being.

“But, if you turn on FIFA, do not underestimate how much people might be willing to forgive. … So, please, release the documents, Mr. Warner, and you may yet salvage your completely tattered reputation.”
