Gregg Popovich To Replace Mike Krzyzewski As USA Basketball Coach In 2017

Gregg Popovich has accomplished just about everything possible for an NBA head coach. In 2017, he will take his talents to international competition as the new head coach of the USA men’s basketball team.

USA Basketball announced the decision Friday afternoon.

It’s been known for some time legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was stepping down as the head coach men’s basketball team after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Coach K took over the job for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He led that squad, nicknamed the “Redeem Team,” to Olympic gold. He also guided Team USA to the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Popovich is a five-time NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs, last winning the title in 2014. In addition to being one of the best coaches in the sport’s history, he also has an impressive knowledge of international basketball, including its leagues, players and playing styles.

During Popovich’s tenure, the Spurs have targeted and signed several of the best international players to enter the NBA in the last 15 years.
