Newcastle United and Manchester United are trying to climb the Premier League standings from vastly different positions.
Newcastle sits 18th and is two points from being clear of the relegation zone. Manchester United is fifth, trailing its closest rival for a top-four spot by three points. Newcastle has lost four consecutive games in all competitions. Manchester United has won both its games in 2016.
Manchester United and Newcastle face off Tuesday at St. James’ Park looking to advance their campaigns toward Premier League success.
The Red Devils will be without Bastian Schweinsteiger, who injured his knee Saturday in Manchester United’s FA Cup win over Sheffield United. Michael Carrick likely will fill the void in Manchester United’s midfield.
Newcastle captain and center back Fabricio Coloccini is doubtful to play against Manchester United. Wayne Rooney has scored 12 league goals against Newcastle — more than any other team besides Aston Villa. Coloccini’s potential absence could tilt the outcome in Rooney’s and Manchester United’s favor.
