The U.S. Navy will present the Boston Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Home Base Program with its highest possible award for a civilian organization prior to Wednesday night’s game at Fenway Park.
The program, which helps post-9/11 veterans heal from post-traumatic stress disorder and other invisible wounds of war, will be presented with the Distinguished Public Service Award by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus before the Red Sox host the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 p.m. ET.
“To have Home Base recognized with this distinctive award is a testament to the important work being carried out by the clinicians and physicians who tackle the challenges faced by our veterans returning from war and their families,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said in a statement. “This program truly saves lives, and we are pleased to be recognized with this high honor by the Navy and Secretary Mabus.”
Secretary Mabus added in the statement: “It is an honor to publicly recognize the outstanding support our Navy and Marine Corps service members and families receive from Home Base. These dedicated people and organizations have built an exceptional network to provide the very best clinical care, community outreach, education and research. We are greatly indebted to people who step up to help our veterans return to their communities.”
Werner, Home Base executive director and Brigadier General (ret.) Jack Hammond, COO Michael Allard and clinical leaders Dr. Peg Harvey and Dr. Louis Chow will accept the award for Home Base.
