Red Sox Wrap: Rick Porcello Outdueled; Boston Loses 3-1 To Mariners

The Red Sox’s bats were silenced Wednesday night, and Rick Porcello was outdueled by Hisashi Iwakuma. Boston lost its second game in a row, this time 3-1, falling to 3-4 on this long West Coast road trip.

Let’s take a look at how things happened.

GAME IN A WORD
Quick.

The official time of game was under two-and-a-half hours in this low-scoring affair.

IT WAS OVER WHEN …
Edwin Diaz recorded the final out of the game.

Boston scored its only run in the ninth and had a runner on third with two outs, but Sandy Leon grounded into the shift for the final out with Andrew Benintendi on deck.

ON THE BUMP
— Porcello was very good. Unfortunately, so was Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma.

What do you think?  Leave a comment.

Porcello allowed just four hits through eight innings of work, but the first three of those hits left the yard for solo home runs. Iwakuma allowed just five hits in 7 1/3 innings, but Boston couldn’t plate a run with him in the game.

For Porcello, the loss snaps a streak of six consecutive wins. It was his first loss since May 17.

IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— Andrew Benintendi was the star of the day, collecting his first career hit and going 2-for-3 with two singles.

— Travis Shaw drove in Boston’s only run in the ninth inning. With one out, Jackie Bradley Jr. singled to right-center field, Aaron Hill was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch moved up the runners and Shaw collected the RBI on a groundout.

— Mookie Betts, Brock Holt, Hill and Sandy Leon also recorded hits.

— Bogaerts had a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning, too. Betts followed Benintendi’s second hit of the night with one of his own, and Bogaerts sent a ball to the warning track in left, just shy of a game-tying three-run homer. David Ortiz sent a ball to the warning track earlier in the game, too.

The Red Sox hope to snap this losing streak in the finale of a four-game set in Seattle. Drew Pomeranz faces Ariel Miranda in Game 4, with first pitch once again scheduled for 10:10 p.m.
