Simone Biles, USA Gymnastics Dominate; Gabby Douglas Misses All-Around Final

We already knew the United States women were the favorites to win the Olympic gymnastics competition in Rio de Janeiro. But what these young women did Sunday in team qualifying events was nothing short of incredible.

An awe-inspiring performance even meant that Gabby Douglas, the defending Olympic all-around gymnastics champion, failed to qualify for the all-around final on a technicality.

Douglas finished with the third-highest score overall behind teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman. But only two athletes per country can compete in each final, meaning Douglas will have to relinquish her position atop the all-around throne and cheer on her teammates.

As a team, the U.S. women finished with a final score of 185.238 — nearly 10 points ahead of the next-closest competitor, China. To establish a big lead in any elite gymnastics meet is rare, but to be this dominant on the grandest stage of them all is unheard of. The scores are erased when the women advance to the final events, but this day won’t be forgotten.

The United States also had the No. 1 scorer in every discipline: Madison Kocian on the uneven bars, and Biles in the floor routine, vault and balance beam. Raisman and Laurie Hernandez finished second in floor and beam, respectively.

Further qualifying takes place Sunday night. USA will have two competitors in every final except for vault, in which Biles was the only one to attempt qualifying.

The team final is Tuesday, with the all-around final scheduled for Thursday.
