Red Sox Wrap: Boston’s Offense Can’t Heat Up Again In 2-1 Loss To Padres

Another day, another poor offensive showing for the Boston Red Sox.

The Sox on Monday dropped their second consecutive one-run game, this one against the San Diego Padres, in what was a good day for starter Drew Pomeranz and his relievers but a rough one for Boston’s hitters. Padres starter Edwin Jackson struck out 11 Red Sox, and the San Diego bullpen struck out three more as Boston’s bats went cold again Sunday’s 1-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Not even David Ortiz could save the Red Sox this time.

The Red Sox’s powerful offense has been anything but over the past two games. Boston has one run in the last 18 innings.

IT WAS OVER WHEN …
The Red Sox couldn’t score in the ninth inning.

Boston had three outs to make something happen, but the club wasn’t able to plate Hanley Ramirez after his one-out infield single.

ON THE BUMP
— Pomeranz put in a pretty solid effort, but it went for naught as the Red Sox failed to score any runs with the left-hander on the mound. Pomeranz’s one big miscue was leaving a 2-0 pitch over the plate to Padres second baseman Adam Rosales, who sent it out of the park with a two-run homer. The 27-year-old ended his outing with two runs allowed on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

— Heath Hembree came on in the sixth with two outs and a runner on second and got Rosales to pop out.

— Robbie Ross Jr. pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning with a strikeout to right fielder Oswaldo Arcia along the way.

— Joe Kelly handled the eighth inning, pitching another 1-2-3 frame with two strikeouts.

IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— Chris Young put the Red Sox on the board in the eighth inning with a leadoff home run pinch-hitting for catcher Bryan Holaday, who went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.

— Ramirez had the only multi-hit game in Boston’s lineup, going 3-for-4.

— Jackie Bradley Jr. had a rough day, going 1-for-4 and leaving four men on base. Brock Holt went 1-for-3.

— Aaron Hill hit a double pinch-hitting out of the pitcher’s spot in the eighth inning, but the Red Sox couldn’t get him across the plate.

— Ortiz came on in the ninth with a runner on and two outs, but he flied out to center field to end the game.

— Dustin Pedroia (0-for-4), Xander Bogaerts (0-for-3 with a walk), Mookie Betts (0-for-3 with a walk) and Yoan Moncada (0-for-3 with three strikeouts) all went hitless.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT
Pedroia’s hitting streak ended, but he managed to do this on the field.
