Trevor Lawrence Basically Shoots Down Idea He’d Spurn Jets In NFL Draft

It doesn't sound like the Clemson QB will pull an Eli Manning

One could argue Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has more leverage than any college prospect in years.

Theoretically, the 21-year-old probably could execute a power play to avoid being drafted by the New York Jets, who currently are positioned to land the top selection thanks to their winless record in 2020.

That said, it doesn't sound like Lawrence intends to go down such a path. Lawrence explained Wednesday on "The Dan Patrick Show" that he's prepared for whatever comes his way at the next level.

"I think I'm ready," Lawrence said. "I think just being here at Clemson, my journey has taught me a lot, I've grown up a lot the past few years. I'm really just ready to take on whatever challenge it is and just have the opportunity."

Dan Patrick understandably pressed Lawrence on the issue, asking whether he's watched the lowly Jets play this season. And still, Lawrence made it seem like he won't force his way to another NFL organization, provided he turns pro as anticipated.

"Honestly, I know some of the stuff I say sounds cliché, but just to have the opportunity to go somewhere, help someone rebuild if that's what it is or whatever -- just win," Lawrence said. "That's something I love doing. I think that's what I'm best at, is winning. Regardless of stats, whatever it is, that's what I love. So just to have that chance. Obviously some places it'll be more of a challenge than others, but I think I'm up for it, and that'll get here when it's here. I'm just trying to focus now on being great where I'm at."

ESPN's Rich Cimini explored the possibility of Lawrence spurning the Jets in a piece published Wednesday, with five prominent agents and three former general managers offering mixed opinions on whether the Clemson QB would consider such a move.

It wouldn't be unprecedented, as Eli Manning forced his way into a trade from the San Diego Chargers to the New York Giants after being selected No. 1 overall in 2004, but Lawrence's comments Wednesday suggest he'll take the more conventional route and suit up for whichever team drafts him -- even if it is the Jets, a franchise known for its front office/coaching instability and its inability to develop quarterbacks.
