Alex Cora Hopeful Kyle Schwarber Will Make Debut At First Base This Week

Kyle Schwarber has yet to make his debut at first base for the Boston Red Sox, but it doesn’t appear fans will have to wait much longer.

Schwarber, who was acquired at the trade deadline, will bat second and serve as the designated hitter Wednesday as the Red Sox host the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox brought Schwarber, who was dealing with a hamstring injury, in hopes of receiving some much-needed help at first base as Bobby Dalbec continues to struggle. Alex Cora has confirmed Schwarber will play the corner position, but had yet to reveal when.

Until Wednesday, anyway.

“We gotta stay away from the field today,” Cora said of Schwarber prior to first pitch. “Long games the last few (days). … He’s eager, so most likely that’s the goal right now.

“We’ll talk about it, see where we’re at physically and make a decision. But I’d love for him to play first base tomorrow,” Cora added.

The Red Sox wrap up their series against the Twins on Thursday, and it seems we very well could see Schwarber take his place at first depending on how Wednesday goes.
