'Just take it day by day'
FOXBORO, Mass. — If there’s one theme from Bill Belichick’s tenure with the New England Patriots, well, aside from the organization’s continuous pursuit of championships, it’d be his ability to offer on-brand responses while being questioned by the media.
That’s exactly what the Patriots head coach did Wednesday.
While speaking to reporters at Gillette Stadium before practice, Belichick addressed the Week 3 injury of Mac Jones. Jones exited Sunday’s game late in the fourth quarter as New England was handed a 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
“Just take it day by day. We’re not really doing anything differently,” Belichick said.
However, Belichick wasn’t done there. The 70-year-old head coach deferred to his vague reply over and over again when members of the media continued to relay Jones-related questions, specifically pertaining to the quarterback’s health just days ahead of the team’s Week 4 game against the Green Bay Packers.
Take a look:
Q: Is the plan built for Mac to have any kind of procedure to help along with the process here?
“Day by day, Phil,” Belichick told NBC Sports’ Phil Perry while cracking a smile. “Day by day. That’s the plan. Day by day.”
Q: Does he (Jones) have a high ankle sprain?
“Day by day,” Belichick said. “What do I look like? A doctor? An orthopedic surgeon? I don’t know. Talk to the medical experts.”
Q: What do the medical experts on staff say to you?
“Day by day,” Belichick said. “We’ll evaluate him — I mean, what difference does it make to me? Do you think I’m gonna read the MRI? That’s not my job.”
For those keeping track at home, the final “day-by-day” count reached 12.
New England’s Week 4 contest against the Packers is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET from Lambeau Field. The Patriots are a 9.5-point road underdog entering the clash with Aaron Rodgers.
