At the end of the day, the Patriots stood pat
4 p.m.: Another year, another quiet trade deadline for the Patriots. New England opted to stand pat at the deadline for the third consecutive season, with no arrivals or departures on Tuesday.
2:40 p.m.: Chase Young is on the move, and not to New England. The Commanders are trading the star pass rusher to the San Francisco 49ers for a mid-round pick, according to multiple reports.
Mac Jones surely will be happy about that deal. He now gets to face a Commanders defense without Young and Montez Sweat when Washington visits Gillette Stadium this Sunday.
2:14 p.m.: We’ve already seen one quarterback trade today, with the Vikings acquiring Josh Dobbs from Arizona in the wake of Kirk Cousins’ season-ending Achilles injury. Could we see another involving Mac Jones? Unlikely.
The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported the Patriots have not received any trade calls on their QB.
1:14 p.m.: Here’s an unexpected development. The Patriots “could be players” for Commanders trade candidate Chase Young, per The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
New England reportedly has “checked in on the price” of the 24-year-old edge rusher, who was drafted second overall in 2020 and is in the final year of his rookie contract.
12:40 p.m.: Another update on the possibility of a Josh Uche trade, this one from ESPN’s Dan Graziano:
11:56 a.m.: The Patriots have gotten trade calls on running back Ezekiel Elliott, according to a report from Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz.
11:45 a.m.: It’s been a quiet morning on the Patriots news front, but here’s one move that will affect them:
The Washington Commanders reportedly agreed to trade defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears for a 2024 second-round pick, according to multiple reports. Washington is set to visit New England on Sunday.
In addition to the on-field implications for this week’s game, the Sweat trade also illustrates that it is possible for non-contending teams (like the Bears and Patriots) to add at the deadline.
Chicago, which also sits at 2-6, presumably is confident it can sign Sweat to a new contract, as paying a second-round pick for an impending free agent rental during a lost season would make little sense.
8 a.m. ET: Happy deadline day, Patriots fans.
The 2023 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Will New England, which sits in last place in the AFC at 2-6 and is an extreme long shot to make the postseason, opt to sell off pieces and begin looking ahead to 2024?
The Patriots do have a few players in contract years who could help contending clubs, most notably pass rusher Josh Uche, whose name has appeared in multiple trade rumors. The Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed on Monday reported Uche was the Patriots player most likely to be moved.
Other candidates include offensive linemen Mike Onwenu and Trent Brown, safeties Kyle Dugger and Jalen Mills, tight ends Mike Gesicki and Hunter Henry, running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, if New England can find any takers for the underperforming wideout. Fellow receiver Kendrick Bourne was removed from the list of possible trade chips when he tore his ACL during Sunday’s loss to Miami.
Will the Patriots be active sellers? Surprise buyers? Or will they stand pat, as they did at each of the last two trade deadlines?
