Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo seems to be aware of his critics.
New England’s head man hasn’t been flawless, and those critics have made sure he knows there are things that can be improved upon moving forward. Mayo, to his credit, has admitted to his mistakes and expects improvements moving forward.
It’s something he’s been touting to his players, and wants to follow himself.
“Just like a player, you expect players — they make their biggest jump from Year 1 to Year 2. My expectations, for me personally, as a head coach is to make the biggest jump from Year 1 to Year 2,” Mayo said, per team-provided transcript. “That’s through doing those deep dives where you actually have time to do them.”
How can he improve? What does he have to improve upon?

“It’s a combination of things. You can start form X’s and O’s. You can then go to situational football. You can also go through structure and culture,” Mayo said. “Do I think I’ve done things right? Absolutely. Are there ways to improve? 1000%. Do I wish I would’ve done certain things differently? Yeah.
“Those are things, when you get a chance, time to reflect, go somewhere where no one can find me by myself — no kids, no nothing — and just reflect ton the season. I think it’s important, not only for football players for anyone to take those times to reflect and see what you can do better.”
Mayo’s ability to admit things haven’t been perfect is commendable, though action steps are needed if he wants to continue to earn time in the head coach’s chair. It’s probably nice for him to get vindication in certain spots, though.
