The Red Sox had a significant impact on the city after the tragic 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
The team played a pivotal role in Boston’s healing and unity when they returned to Fenway Park to face the Kansas City Royals five days later, and Jonny Gomes had a massive role in the Red Sox’s come-from-behind win.
The 2013 World Series champion not only got the lead-off hit in the eighth inning to spark the rally, but Gomes also had the famous “Boston Strong” pose that landed him on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
“It’s such a great photo and a great pose, and it means so much,” Gomes told NESN’s Tom Caron and Jim Rice on the “310 To Left” podcast. “And, if I was ever to get a cover of S.I., it would have to be for something like that. That’s not the talented MVP, triple crown type.
“So, I’m proud of it. It’s hung up high in my house along with that jersey.”
