Bruins assistant general manager Don Sweeney has quite the history with the team — he played for the B’s for nearly his entire 16-year career.
On Nov. 14, 2002, Sweeney suited up for his 1,000th NHL game and was honored on the ice before the Bruins dominated the New York Islanders 4-1. Sweeney was drafted by the B’s in 1984 as their eighth-round pick (166th overall), and went on to play four years at Harvard University before suiting up professionally for the first time in 1987.
Sweeney is one of just two defensemen in Bruins history to notch more than 1,000 games in a Boston sweater, and still ranks third on the team’s all-time games played list. In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we take you back to that night 11 years ago at TD Garden, when the Bruins honored Sweeney for his commitment to the team.
The defenseman finished with 1,115 regular season games played when he retired in 2004 with the Dallas Stars. In his career, Sweeney amassed 52 goals and 221 assists for 273 points and 681 penalty minutes.
