The man rewrote the record books in college basketball in the 1960s and ’70s, and no one has gotten close to whiting out his name. The first person to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach, Wooden also still stands as far and away the leader in captured national titles with 10, which he unfathomably done in just 12 years at UCLA, including seven straight national championships from 1964-1975.
Wooden embodied grace. He never brought in a salary of more than $35,000, and never asked for a raise. His .804 career winning percentage is legendary, but not nearly as legendary as the man himself.
Here’s to you, John Wooden. You will be sorely missed.
