Kelly Shoppach Traded by Red Sox to Mets for Player to Be Named LaterThe Red Sox are making the most of their wealth of talent behind the plate.

Kelly Shoppach has been traded to the Mets for a player to be named later, general manager Ben Cherington announced in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

With Jarrod Saltalamacchia getting the bulk of the starts behind the plate this season and catcher-of-the-future Ryan Lavarnway being called up this month, Shoppach was facing increasingly less playing time.

Shoppach appeared in 48 games for Boston this season, batting .250 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. Shoppach, a lifetime .227 hitter, was drafted by Boston in 2001 and first called up in 2005. He played for the Indians and the Rays before returning to Boston this season.
