Jarrod Saltalamacchia Sidelined by Back Spasms After Hefty Workload, Long Road Trip

Jarrod Saltalamacchia Sidelined by Back Spasms After Hefty Workload, Long Road TripBOSTON — Back spasms have resulted in Jarrod
Saltalamacchia
's latest setback.

During the seventh inning of the series opener against
the Blue Jays, the catcher left the game and was replaced by Ryan Lavarnway. A
day later, Lavarnway received the starting nod over Saltalamacchia.

"Salty is going to rest all day today and not take
batting practice," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "He had a pretty good spasm and we
talked about the situation and the situation is, let’s make sure it’s perfect
before he gets back in September. But he wants to play, so it will probably
only be a day or two."

It's the first occurrence of the back spasms for Saltalamacchia. Initially,
Valentine attributed the incident to the hour-long rain delay before Friday's
game, but then claimed it was the culmination of the workload.

"He had a little situation but I’d have to think all
the West Coast travel and then coming back, he’s a big guy in those
seats," Valentine said. "Over 100 games behind the plate."

In 106 games for the Red Sox, Saltalamacchia has batted
.225 while unloading 23 home runs and 53 RBIs.
