Robinson Cano Becomes U.S. Citizen, Tweets Pictures of Ceremony (Photos)

Despite a nightmare postseason, Robinson Cano has reason to celebrate.

Just four days after winning the Silver Slugger Award for his production at the plate, the Yankees second baseman officially became a U.S. citizen Tuesday morning. Cano tweeted pictures from the ceremony.

“Very proud day for me,” Cano tweeted. “I just became a US citizen, God bless America!”

A native of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, Cano started playing in the Yankees’ farm system in 2001. He was called up in 2005 and has been a staple in the Yankees’ lineup since.

Through eight seasons with the Yankees, Cano has hit 177 home runs and driven in 715 runs. Last season, he carried the New York offense, delivering a career-high 33 homers to go along with 94 RBIs and a .313 batting average.
