Allen Craig won’t be facing his former team this week after all.
Craig, who was acquired by the Boston Red Sox last Thursday, will be placed on the disabled list after playing just one game with the team, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.
Maureen Mullen was the first to report the move, which the team has yet to confirm.
Craig started in left field Friday after coming to Boston from the St. Louis Cardinals in the trade for John Lackey and went 1-for-4 with a double in a win over the New York Yankees. He tweaked his ankle running the bases in the eighth inning, though, and did not play in the series’ final two games.
The Red Sox reportedly will recall outfielder Corey Brown from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Craig’s spot on the roster. Recently acquired reliever Heath Hembree also will be recalled, according to reports, and knuckleballer Steven Wright will be sent down.
Brown played in 36 games for the Washington Nationals from 2011 to 2013, and Hembree made nine appearances for the San Francisco Giants last season.
The Red Sox begin a three-game series Tuesday against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Right-hander Joe Kelly, who came over with Craig in the Lackey deal, is scheduled to start Wednesday night against his former club.
