Montreal Canadiens To Retire Defenseman Guy Lapointe’s No. 5 In November

1972 Summit Series:  Canada v Soviet UnionThe Montreal Canadiens announced Friday that they will retire Guy Lapointe’s No. 5 before their Nov. 8 matchup with the Minnesota Wild at the Bell Centre.

Lapointe, a Hall of Fame defenseman, played on six Stanley Cup-winning teams in 14 years with the Habs. He was a member of the Canadiens’ Big Three alongside Serge Savard and Larry Robinson.

Lapointe will be the 18th Canadien to have his number retired. The No. 5 jersey also has previously been retired for Bernard “Boom Boom” Geoffrion.

Lapointe tallied 166 goals and 416 assists in 777 NHL games from 1968 to 1984.

The 66-year-old now works as the coordinator of amateur scouting for the Wild.
