Chili DavisThe Boston Red Sox hope to improve their offense after a disappointing 2014 season. They’re bringing in a new hitting coach to help them do it.

Multiple outlets cited sources in reporting Sunday that the Red Sox have hired former major league outfielder Chili Davis as their hitting coach, replacing Greg Colbrunn, who elected not to return after two seasons in the position. Davis is believed to have agreed to a multiyear contract with Boston, MLB.com reported, although the team hasn’t confirmed any hire.

Davis spent the previous three seasons as the Oakland A’s hitting coach. He has experience in the Red Sox organization, having served as Triple-A Pawtucket’s hitting instructor in 2011.

Davis hit .274 with 350 home runs and 1,372 RBIs over 19 major league seasons. He also was named to three All-Star teams — in 1984 and 1986 with the San Francisco Giants and in 1994 with the then-California Angels.

The Red Sox finished 18th in the majors last season with 634 runs scored, one year after leading the league with 853 runs in 2013.
