Craig Cunningham was brought on the Boston Bruins’ four-game Western Conference road trip but he will be going back to the AHL midway through.

The B’s sent him to the Providence Bruins on Wednesday, per the AHL’s transactions page. Boston still has an extra forward on the roster if injuries or poor performances warrant any lineup changes.

Seth Griffith has been a healthy scratch for the first two games on the current road trip, which has included losses to the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings.

Cunningham has appeared in three games for Boston this season. He was named captain of the P-Bruins in November and has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 18 AHL games.

Boston’s next game is Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks. The road trip concludes Saturday night versus the Arizona Coyotes.
