Marcus Smart has been lauded for his competitive fire since he joined the Boston Celtics, but that intensity got the best of him Friday night in San Antonio.

Smart was assessed a flagrant 2 foul and ejected for punching big man Matt Bonner during the fourth quarter of the Celtics’ 101-89 loss to the Spurs.

The ejection was Smart’s second of the season and more than likely will result in a suspension. That would be the last thing the Celtics need right now, as they already are down one point guard with Isaiah Thomas still sidelined.

Thomas has missed Boston’s last six games as he recovers from a bruised lower back, and head coach Brad Stevens said before Friday’s game that he likely will not be available until Wednesday.
