BOSTON — The Red Sox are back to having 13 position players on their active roster.

The Red Sox added infielder Luis Jimenez to their major league roster before Monday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Jimenez, who was claimed off waivers Sunday from the Milwaukee Brewers, will replace right-handed pitcher Dalier Hinojosa, who was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Jimenez was designated for assignment by Milwaukee on Saturday. He appeared in 15 games with the Brewers this season, mostly at third base, and went 1-for-15 with a walk and a run scored. The 27-year-old has appeared in 67 big league games over parts of three seasons with the Brewers and Los Angeles Angels, batting .218 (34-for-156).

Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Monday’s game that Jimenez will serve in a right-handed utility role with Boston. Jimenez is most experienced at third base, but he also has played first base, second base and shortstop.

Hinojosa made his major league debut Sunday after being promoted for the first time last week. The 29-year-old Cuban pitcher walked three and struck out two over 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Jimenez will wear No. 16 with the Red Sox.
