Dave Dombrowski: Red Sox’s Payroll ‘Not Going Backwards’ For 2016

Expect the Boston Red Sox to continue to flex their financial muscle.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was asked Tuesday during a press conference at Fenway Park whether he has a ballpark figure for how much Boston’s payroll will be for 2016. He was vague in his response, but there’s nothing to suggest the Red Sox aren’t willing to spend.

“It’s not going backwards,” Dombrowski said of the payroll. “But I don’t really have a specific number.”

As a follow-up, Dombrowski was asked if the Red Sox’s payroll could approach the figure Boston shelled out in 2015. The Red Sox, who signed Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval to lucrative contracts last winter, opened the season with a payroll in excess of $184 million, according to Cot’s Contracts.

“If you say ‘ballpark,’ yeah, that would be safe to say it’s in the same ‘ballpark,’ ” said Dombrowski who previously noted how general the term “ballpark” can be.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Red Sox allocate their resources this offseason, especially with the team needing a No. 1 starter and there being several aces available in free agency. There’s no denying the organization’s commitment to rebounding from its third last-place finish in four seasons, though.

“They’re very desired to win,” Dombrowski said of Red Sox ownership.
