The Boston Red Sox’s top prospect is in hot water with Major League Baseball after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
Michael Chavis was suspended 80 games Friday by the league for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. He tested positive for taking the PED Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.
After the suspension was announced, Chavis took to Twitter to release a personal statement — which is effective immediately. Though apologetic, the 22-year-old vehemently denied ever knowingly taking the substance.
The Red Sox also released a brief statement.
“The Boston Red Sox fully support Major League Baseball and the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,” the statement read. “While we are disappointed by the news of this violation, we will look to provide the appropriate support to Michael. Going forward, the club will not comment further on the matter.”
Chavis was set to begin the year with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. He was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2014 draft out of Clemson University.
