Right-handed pitcher Enrique Gonzalez was activated from Triple-A Pawtucket before Saturday's game against New York while right-hander Michael Bowden was optioned back to the PawSox after Friday's 20-11 loss to the Yankees.

Gonzalez was added to the active roster on Aug. 8 and made an appearance against the Yankees that day, allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Afterward, he was designated for assignment and was sent to Pawtucket on Aug. 12.

In 23 games with the PawSox, Gonzalez is 7-11 with a 5.23 ERA and ranks third in the Red Sox system with 94 strikeouts. He was signed as a minor league free agent on Dec. 10, 2008. He is 4-7 with a 6.04 ERA in 28 major league appearances with the Diamondbacks, Padres and Red Sox.

The 22-year-old Bowden made his second stint with Boston on Friday night, allowing seven runs in two innings against New York. Although he owns a whopping 15.75 ERA in the big leagues this season, Bowden posted a 4-6 record with a 3.20 ERA in 22 starts in Pawtucket in 2009. His ERA is the fifth-best among International League pitchers.
