Bruins Facing Virtual Must-Win in Final Matchup With Senators This Season The Bruins and Senators square off for the final time this season in a crucial Northeast Division tilt. The Bruins have fallen on dire times and are on the verge of falling out of the top eight spots in the Eastern Conference if they lose on Saturday.

The Senators humiliated the Bruins 5-1 on Monday and haven’t stopped since, with wins over the powerful Blackhawks and then the Blues. They bring a five-game win streak into Saturday’s matinee, while the Bruins have lost three straight and six of their last seven. They are 0-2-0 on this three-game home-stand and 1-5-1 in their last seven home games.

Needless to say, this is a must-win.

WHEN AND WHERE

Saturday Jan. 23, 1 p.m. (NESN)
TD Garden, Boston, Mass.

RECORDS

Bruins (23-18-8, 54 points, third place in Northeast Division, seventh place in Eastern Conference)
Senators (27-21-4, second place in Northeast Division, fifth in Eastern Conference)

HEAD TO HEAD

This is the sixth and final meeting of the season between the Bruins and the Senators. Until last Monday’s 5-1 loss to Ottawa, Boston had dominated the season series, winning the first four games.

Boston leads the lifetime series 55-29-8-7.

SKINNY

Although the Bruins are 12-3-1 when leading after two periods of play, they have lost the last three times they have been in such a position. Such was the case during Thursday's loss to the Blue Jackets.

"It just goes to show that every year’s different and we shouldn’t count on things being automatic," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. "You’ve got to make things happen. There’s not doubt. You’ve heard me say that a million times. This is a game where confidence plays a big role. We were a confident team after two periods, we were playing well, we had lots of chances, and, as I mentioned [Thursday] night, it could have easily been more than a 2-1 hockey game.

“You don’t capitalize on some of those excellent chances, they tie it up, and then all of a sudden you tighten up," Julien continued. "And why do you tighten up? It’s because you don’t have the confidence you would if you had been having success."

OVERHEARD

"You guys bring that stuff up. I don’t bring that stuff up to these guys because, as I just mentioned, why do you want to put extra pressure? They can see the standings, they know what’s going on. Do you have to shove it down their throats? Or just kind of let them sort those kinds of things out? They know where we are. We know where we are. It’s just a matter of going out there and playing a game.”
–Julien, on the Bruins' place in the standings

OUTLOOK

If payback isn’t on the Bruins' minds on Saturday, then maybe they should just mail in the season. Despite understandably being tired and banged up in Monday’s embarrassing 5-1 loss, the Bruins must be bitter over a game like that — and that alone must have them fired up for this game. The fact that Boston is trailing Ottawa in the standings is even more motivation.

That being said, as the Bruins proved Thursday, if they can’t maintain that motivation for three periods, all previous efforts are meaningless. The key on Saturday will be seeing if the Bruins can go all-out, faceoff to final buzzer, and convert that into a victory.
