The Red Sox are asking fans to help youngsters play ball. This weekend, the team is holding its "Kids Gear for Baseball" promotion during the Phillies series at Fenway Park.

Fans can drop off new and used baseball equipment outside all Fenway Park gates on June 11, 12 or 13. The equipment will go to "Kids Gear for Baseball," a nonprofit organization that takes donated equipment and distributes it to youth baseball leagues in need.

These include organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Lower Merrimack Valley, Worcester and Lawrence. Equipment is also given to the Special Olympics and Cross Roads for Kids.

"Thanks to the support of the Red Sox, ‘Kids Gear’ donated equipment to more than 30 youth organizations, shelters and missions over the last several years reaching out to thousands of kids” said Kaitlyn Chisholm, managing director of the group. "We look forward to providing even more kids with the equipment they need to play ball this season."

The group has been gathering equipment for youth leagues in need since it was founded in 2002. It is now led by Lynnfield, Mass., natives and sisters Kaitlyn and Kelsey Chisholm. Kaitlyn is a junior at Lynnfield High School, and Kelsey is a varsity softball player at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Fans who donate equipment at the game will also be eligible to win autographed memorabilia and other prizes.
