One of the hot topics facing the Red Sox this season is the question of whether or not to bring back catcher Victor Martinez. While he stepped up as one of the more consistent and dependable players of the 2010 season, is he worth another go-around?
His performance in 2010 speaks for itself, as he's been nothing but consistent from the plate for the Red Sox. Ranking third behind David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre in RBIs with 77 while posting a .300 batting average on the season is nothing to scoff at, and he's been dynamite against lefties — to the tune of a .396 batting average and 1.160 OPS. Those numbers have helped the Red Sox as Ortiz historically struggles against southpaws.
The Red Sox paid $7.7 million for the catcher in 2010, and he'll be looking for another solid paycheck in 2011 — thanks to his contributions this year. Teams like the Tigers and the White Sox will both be in the market for catchers this season and would be willing to pay big for Martinez's versatility. The question remains if Boston GM Theo Epstein will be willing to match with the Red Sox' checkbook.
One glaring issue with Martinez was his bout with injury this season. Compared to other Red Sox' injuries it was a mere blip on the radar screen, but it's one that shouldn't be ignored. The catcher, who turns 32 in December, did however make admirable returns after his DL stint, which was huge for the Red Sox in a season plagued with injuries.
Boston is looking at other options behind the plate, however, with the recent signing of Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the determined nature of longtime captain Jason Varitek. The Red Sox had been pining after the switch-hitting Saltalamacchia for a while, and it's been said they're looking at bringing him around as the everyday option, with the possibility of Varitek serving as the bargain backup.
The organization definitely could bust out the checkbook for Martinez if it wanted to, and his versatility is definitely a point to throw in the pros column. He's proven his talents at first base, and could be used as a designated hitter as well.
All in all, the Red Sox' front office has a lot to mull over this winter in determining the 2011 roster. The question is, should Victor Martinez be on it?
