Prior to Friday night's game in Chicago, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen joked about how his team would end Dustin Pedroia's career-high hitting streak, which stood at 25 games.
Guillen was simply poking fun at a player he respects, but his prediction did ring true in the end.
Pedroia went 0-for-4, ending a game without a hit for the first time since June 28. There were three ground outs to the left side of the infield and a fly to center in the ninth inning of the 3-1 loss to Chicago.
Following the game, Pedroia was able to reflect on a streak that left him nine games shy of the club record.
"Yeah, it's tough [to keep it going that long]," he said. "The pitchers that we face, they have great stuff, so day in and day out it's difficult to do. It was cool. It's good that I've been that consistent. I've just got to keep it going."
Pedroia hit .404 (44-for-109) with nine home runs, nine doubles, 20 RBIs, 27 runs scored and 12 walks during the 25-game streak. It ends as the longest in the American League this year, the longest in franchise history for a second baseman and tied for 11th-longest overall by a Red Sox player.
