Clayton Mortensen, Junichi Tazawa Sent to Triple-A Pawtucket As Red Sox Trim Roster Before Opening Day

As the Red Sox draw closer to opening day, the final roster begins to take shape. For that to happen, some players will be optioned to the minor leagues, a process that the Sox continued on Friday.

Pitchers Clayton Mortensen and Junichi Tazawa were sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket along with catcher Luis Exposito.

Mortensen and Tazawa were both possibilities to land in the Sox bullpen. Mortensen had pitched well during spring training, not allowing an earned run in six innings of work. Tazawa had a decent spring as well, compiling a 3.86 ERA in five appearances. Exposito was batting .111 before being sent to Triple-A.

The Sox made other roster moves on Friday, sending right-handed pitcher Brandon Duckworth, left-handed pitcher Jesse Carlson, catcher Max St. Pierre and outfielder Alex Hassan to minor league camp.
