It’s rare nowadays to see a player stay with one team throughout his entire career. Dustin Pedroia might be on the path to becoming such a player.
Pedroia and the Red Sox are discussing a long-term contract extension that could exceed $100 million and keep the four-time All-Star in Boston for the foreseeable future, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan. The contract reportedly would make Pedroia the game’s highest-paid second baseman.
Passan reports that while the two sides must still bridge a gap in dollars and years, both parties are motivated to make a deal. The general framework of the contract, according to Passan, could be an annual salary of around $20 million for five or six years, which is in line with the six-year, $100 million extension that Evan Longoria signed with the Rays this past offseason.
Pedroia is under contract for two more years after this season. He is slated to make $10 million in 2014, and the Red Sox hold an $11 million club option for 2015. But the Red Sox obviously would love to lock up Pedroia, who has been one of the team’s centerpieces since bursting onto the scene during his rookie campaign in 2007.
ESPN.com’s Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox made a formal contract offer to Pedroia over the All-Star break.
