Jason Heyward left Wednesday’s game against the Mets in the top of the sixth inning after getting hit in the jaw by a pitch.
The right fielder was up to bat with two outs in the sixth when a 90-mph fastball from John Niese struck the side of Heyward’s face. Heyward stumbled to the ground, clearly dazed, and was immediately tended to by a trainer. After lying on his back for a few moments, Heyward was able to walk off the field with the help of trainer Jeff Porter.
Heyward was examined by the Mets team doctors before being transported to a local hospital to undergo X-rays and further tests, according to MLB.com.
Update: MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that Heyward suffered a broken jaw on the play and will likely miss four to six weeks.
