Zack Greinke Throws Just Four Pitches In First Start, Leaves With Calf Strain

zack-greinkeLos Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke didn’t make it a full inning in his first start of the exhibition season.

Greinke left Thursday’s spring training game against the Arizona Diamondbacks after throwing just four pitches for what the Dodgers later called “precautionary reasons — right calf strain.”

Greinke retired Tony Campana on a flyout to left field and was on his second pitch to Cliff Pennington when Dodgers director of medical services Stan Conte and manager Don Mattingly joined him on the mound. After Greinke attempted a few more warm-up pitches, Conte walked him off the mound to sit the game out.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks start the regular season March 22 with a two-games series in Australia. Greinke, Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Dan Haren are each preparing as possible starters for the games down under.
