The St. Louis Blues were dominated by the Colorado Avalanche 4-0 on Saturday afternoon, and their frustration was evident throughout the third period.
Blues center David Backes took a perfectly clean hit by Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon and proceeded to go after the 18-year-old forward and bring him down to the ice. It also looked like Backes threw a few jabs after dropping his gloves.
MacKinnon left the ice and went to the locker room, but he did return and finished the game.
The two teams came together at the benches a few minutes later and a mini brawl ensued.
Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy was not happy Backes’ actions, and he called the Blues captain “gutless” when asked about the altercation with MacKinnon. [tweet https://twitter.com/MichelleTuckner/status/452557192713887744 align=”center”]
Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock refused to get into a war of words with Roy. [tweet https://twitter.com/lkorac10/status/452560956543868928 align=”center”]
If these teams win their first-round playoff series later this month, it’s likely they will meet in the Western Conference semifinals. That would make for an exciting and physical seven-game series.
