With two prospects in the Futures Game promoted to the big leagues, two Boston Red Sox prospects have been added to take their places.
Pawtucket Red Sox catcher and Puerto Rican-born prospect Christian Vazquez has been added to the World roster to replace Christian Bethancourt, who was promoted to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Vazquez is batting .275 with three home runs in Pawtucket and has thrown out 39 percent of attempted base-stealers.
Second baseman/outfielder Mookie Betts also will be unable to play after his call-up to Boston, so Portland Sea Dogs second baseman Sean Coyle will replace him on the United States roster. Coyle missed some of the beginning of the season with a hamstring injury but is batting .363 since returning.
Vazquez and Coyle will join fellow Sox prospect Henry Owens, a left-handed pitcher for the Sea Dogs, as Boston reps in the game.
The Futures Game is an annual minor league showcase that takes place before the All-Star Game. This year’s Futures Game will be played Sunday, June 13, at Target Field in Minneapolis.
